Middlewood House – A Hidden Gem
Tucked away in a lovely setting amongst the trees of Middlewood, is a living link to Poynton’s past.

This interesting old building was at one time the Anchordene Café built nearly a hundred years ago to cater for the many visitors to the area. In those days, people from Manchester and other industrial towns would cycle or come by train to enjoy the countryside around Middlewood and escape the grime of the mills and factories for the day. Particularly popular was the annual Sunday School Outings.
The café, with its leaky roof and Elsan toilets was purchased in 1954 by the local branch of TOC H. This Christian fellowship for men did much charitable work and service to the local community.
Over the years rebuilding took place and the facilities greatly improved due to the hard work of volunteers.
In 1975 Middlewood House became a limited company and a venue for many charitable, social and private events.
Today, the Elsan toilets have long since gone and it is home to the many and varied activities of Middlewood Women’s Institute. The Middlewood Wine Society has enjoyed many a convivial evening, as too has the Carleton Club, a friendly local social group whose members mostly live on or near Carleton Road.
Catering for up to sixty people, private parties for weddings and birthdays are a regular feature and in summer sometimes the grounds outside are used.
Middlewood House continues to be an important social centre for Middlewood and Higher Poynton and welcomes enquiries from potential regular and occasional users.
