In May 2007, Middlewood and Higher Poynton WI was awarded a Lottery Grant to visit the WI's own college near Oxford. Denman College is a very popular place but we were fortunate enough to be able to go on November 30th due to a cancellation.
We arrived about 2.30pm on the Friday and so had plenty of time to settle in and familiarise ourselves with our surroundings before dinner. After dinner we had the introductions to our chosen courses: Beading for beginners, Christmas Review and Discovering Oxford throuh Inspector Morse. On Saturday the 19 ladies on the Discovering Oxford course were taken, by coach, into Oxford for a guided tour. They visited some of the Colleges there as well as other sights seen in the Inspector Morse series, all made even more interesting by the knowledgeable course leader. They returned mid-afternoon, tired, cold and wet but having thoroughly enjoyed themselves! The ladies on the Beading couse worked industriously making ear rings, bracelets and necklaces. By the end of Saturday their eyes were tired after all the concentration required but they returned bright and eager on Sunday morning to learn more beading patterns. They are hoping to be able to pass on their newly learned skills to other members of their WI. The 3 ladies on the Christmas Review, together with 3 ladies from a WI group in the Isle of Wight, spent the weekend singing. During Saturday, they rehearsed a few carols and songs and these were the highlight of the entertainment on Saturday evening. We are now expecting them to entertain us at our party on December 12th.
We arrived back in Poynton on Sunday evening having had a wonderful weekend and are extremely grateful to the Lottery Fund for supporting us in this venture.
