Pupil's Success in BAE Systems National Competition

Helen Marston
Jan 7, 2008

Jessica Parker, a Year 1 pupil at Poynton’s Vernon Primary School, was thrilled to be successful in a national competition run by BAE Systems.

School children from around the country were asked to design a poster to be used on the BAE Systems 2008 calendar.  The poster was to depict an environmental responsibility and how this can produce a reduction in environmental costs, such as recycling, putting litter in the bin and switching off lights.

Jessica’s poster, on the theme of ‘walking to school’, is shown on the month of March.  Due to her success, Jessica received £50 worth of Argos vouchers.  In addition, the school received £100 of Argos vouchers for participating in the competition.

Malcolm Adams, Head of Public Affairs for BAE Systems at Woodford said “We had well over four hundred entries from schools across England, Scotland and Wales, so for Jessica’s poster to have been just one of twelve selected for the calendar was brilliant news.  Her name, and that of Vernon Infant School, now features on thousands of calendars being distributed across BAE Systems and a number of RAF stations – which is well-deserved national recognition for Jessica and for the school.  We are all looking forward to March!”.

Headteacher at the school, Joanne Glimmerveen, added “We were delighted to take part in the competition.  The children thoroughly enjoyed using their imagination on Eco issues, and they produced some wonderful pieces of work which were entered into the competition.  We are all thrilled for Jessica.”
