Young people often get a bad press but this unfair stereotype doesn’t do them justice.
An award winning brass band, whose players are all local schoolchildren, will prove this stereotype wrong by raising money to help Christian Aid’s work in fighting poverty.
The concert, which features Stockport Schools’ Intermediary Brass Band, takes place on December 5th, at Bramhall’s United Reformed Church, will also highlight the band’s skill and enthusiasm.
Stockport Schools' Brass Bands were formed in 1978. In 1991, after a change in policy within Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC)
Music Department - following the Education Reform Act - the Stockport School's Brass Bands Parents Association was formed to take over the actual running of the bands. The Bands’ players either go to school in Stockport or live there.
SSBB’s Terry Partidge says: “We have three Bands, Junior, Intermediate and Senior and we try to make Saturday morning rehearsals a fun time, with serious music education.
“Music provides an excellent grounding for a young person’s development in life, from self confidence and communication skills to self discipline and MF organisation skills. And although there is disappointment in contests if we don’t win, that is also an important part of life. It also provides opportunities to meet other people later in life. We are proud that we provide support for the community and charity at the events, and are delighted to be able to help Christian Aid.”
Howard Fox, of United Reformed Church, is organising the event for Christian Aid and says: “We’re all looking forward to hearing the band again as they’ve always been wonderful in the past. The needs of Christian Aid have never been greater.”
The concert is at URC, Robins Lane, Bramhall and begins at 7:30. Tickets are adults £5 and children £3 (no concessions), and can be bought on the door or by calling Howard on 0161 439 7648. Free tea and biscuits are included
