If anyone was shopping in Stockport town centre yesterday they may have wondered what was happening, lots of people running around with maps in hand.

This was the first ever Town Centre orienteering race held in Stockport, for regular orienteers, runners and anyone who fancied trying out something a bit different.

There were several courses, between 3 km and 7.5 km. The winner of the longest course was ex International orienteer, who completed to course in 36 minutes, very quick considering the hills, building and steps that had to be navigated around.

Over 150 people took part, coming from all ove the country, with ages ranging from 14 to 75.

Barclays won the Town Challenge Shield, closely followed by a team from Fujitsu.

Macclesfield Harriers won the Runner Challenge team event.

Orienteering is a sport for all ages and really is not difficult. Our club hold frequent local events and members are always happy to guide beginners.

The next event is at Alderley Edge on Tuesday 15th July.
