The National Blood Service (NBS) is calling all potential donors across the North West to make time to attend their local donation sessions throughout May.
A session will take place at the Parish Centre on Green Lane, Hazel Grove on Thursday May 1 between 1.30 and 3.30pm and from 5.30 to 7.30pm.
The reason it is so important that donors make a special effort to come forward is because the two bank holiday weekends in May can lead to poor session attendance due to regular donors being away which in turn leads to a fall in blood stocks.
Cathy Davies, Communications Officer for the NBS said: “We understand that people use the bank holiday weekends as an opportunity to go away, but the demand for blood never stops. We are urging people to please try and attend a session in their local area before, during or after the bank holiday weekends.’’
Regular donors are needed to ensure that blood stocks stay healthy so that hospitals in the area can continue to carry out treatments to save and improve patient’s lives. Despite this only 4% of the eligible population are active blood donors. If you haven’t donated before, make this the time to begin!
Anyone aged between 17 and 59, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12 lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. For details of other sessions in your area or tobook an appointment call 08457 711 711 or visit www.blood.co.uk.
