2007 - A Year in the Life of Poynton / Hazel Grove Round Table
A flavour of what Round Table have got up to in the last year…
JANUARY
Only the really serious sportsman turned out for Racquetball, (plus Nige, Bazza & Pete). No mercy was shown with youth winning over experience!
FEBRUARY
Scuba Diving in the Macclesfield Barrier Reef was limited to a selection of plasters, balls of hair and an assortment of gunge that was best to stay away from! Scoobing was surprisingly easy and we all wanted more!
Scalextric is always fun. A really top night with endless bottles of beer on the bus (for the long journey to Marple); a great race night with a Chilli afterwards and even a bottle-bank at the pub!
MARCH
Table Tennis was a racquetball revenge match between Karl and Mark. Roll on the Tennis Tournament!
APRIL
Two-little-ducks and two-fat-ladies at Bingo. What a fun night and cheap beer too!
MAY
Tai Chi was so easy, and what a bunch of posers we all were! We needed flexible comfortable clothes for making space for the generous portions of the obligatory chilli and chips.
A welcome return to the Macclesfield Beer Festival. Just as many rude beers this year and we all had a Naked Lady and a Bit'a’Ruff. Once again the live bands were quite good and it was a Top Night.
JUNE
Celebrations as we won the Redesmere Raft Race. We were one of nine crafts and we won easily.
Ice Skating was really superb! Some of us were ace: some of us were not! (ask to see the photos).
The Family Rounders was a big hit as was the BBQ. So many people turned up and so many kids knocked seven bells out of Karl & Angela’s garden shed.
The 20:20 Cricket was a great victory for Lancashire over Yorkshire. We were lucky with the weather and had a good turn out for a curry at the Deeba!
Helping at Lower Park Summer Fair was hoot! Our Beat-the-Goalie shoot-out was the only stall outside in the pouring rain. Respect to DaveH and Karl for sticking it out in goal as RT Bear! Good to see the school promoting balanced meals: cans of Fosters, burgers & minirolls!
JULY
The Archery at Bruntwood Park was big success for our oldest member. He beat the young guys to make up for him getting breathless at the Racquetball. The Chinese Banquet in Cheadle was superb.
As usual the Boozy Bike Ride crew asked for directions in the Bull, Miners, Windmill on their way to dine at the Vale. And as usual all were very lucky not to end up in the canal!
AUGUST
The Alderley Edge Mines trip was very enlightening (apart from it being a bit dark) as the history and the tunnels and caves themselves went back a long way!
At the Pitch & Putt, it was actually quite difficult to tell the non-golfers from the duffers as the scores were all so very close. The highlight of course was giving Pete the wobbly joke ball.
SEPTEMBER
The Tennis was easy to run with 12 players on three courts. Some creative accounting gave Simon, our newest member, victory!
At the Business Meeting we listened to a few speakers asking for our support and several items were voted through.
OCTOBER
We cheered on Macclesfield Town FC against Rotherham.
We all thought we could do it better than Macc Town, so Indoor 5-a-side Football was the next challenge.
A Bonfire Business Meeting ensured all was in place for the bonfire and all who stayed away got the worst jobs!
NOVEMBER
The build-up to the Bonfire & Fireworks Display was great with good weather filling us all with confidence. All went to plan on the day like a well-oiled machine! Fantastic effort from the New Guys! Another Best-Ever and another record year!
All the bumps and bruises were then rubbed off at Serenity Massage.
Pete’s Perfect Pub Crawl was in Manchester with drinks waiting on the bar at all nine pubs thanks to our lackeys. Home on the last train and work in the morning - Ouch!!
DECEMBER
No actual meetings this month, (apart from 15 nights on the Santa Float, and YES, another record here too) just a few quickies at the Farmers’ Arms & Bull’s Head and a cheeky curry at the Deeba.
Stand-by for another TOP YEAR in POYNTON / HAZEL GROVE ROUND TABLE.
Seven new young guys joined last year but more are always welcome! In addition to having a laugh we also raise a significant amount for distribution to local good causes through the Poynton Bonfire and the Santa Float, so if you know of any local worthy causes that need specific assistance, please get in touch (www.poyntonroundtable.co.uk). Last year we supported many local good causes including First Responders, East Cheshire Hospice, Francis House and the Deva Park redevelopment If you’re an active guy under 45 and fancy finding more about who and what Round Table are and what you’re missing out on, check out our website or give Karl a call anytime (01625 871146). See you around…
