During the summer most of us will be heading away for a well earned holiday.

But whatever the time of year demand for blood remains constant.Blood supplies typically dip slightly during the summer months as people seek warmer climes or try to make the most of the British weather.

Yet, everyday hospitals across England and North Wales still require 7,000 units of blood to ensure patients receive life saving treatment.Shaun Almond, NBS communications officer for the North West said everyone deserves to take time off and relax during the summer.

“But whatever the time of year regular blood donation is vital,” he said.“The NBS needs new and returning donors to give blood all year round so that everyone can enjoy a safe and happy summer.”

Anyone aged 17 – 60, weighing over 7st 12lbs (50 kg) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.
