POYNTON : Clubs and Societies : 2nd Poynton Scouts

2007 Promises to be a Great Year for 2nd Poynton Scouts

David Kershaw
Dec 17, 2006

In 2006 Second Poynton Scouts went sailing, rock climbing, played wide games in the fields and Poynton neighbourhood, built a Monkey Bridge across the stream in the Coppice,  went on a bike ride along Middlewood Way to McDonalds, found out what it is like to be locked in the back of a police van, cooked outdoors, made pancakes and yummy pudding, made a climbing frame from poles, we had our own firework display and bonfire, played football, played games and had challenge nights in the scout hut and these are just some of the varied activities the Scouts enjoyed.

Climbing at Windgather Rocks

The Scout Group is lucky to have excellent facilities including a climbing wall at their HQ as well as four sailing boats and experienced sailing and climbing instructors. The climbing wall is used to develop climbing skills and build confidence.

Raft on Rudyard Lake

In June the boys camped on the bank of Rudyard Lake and spent the weekend sailing. They built their own raft from a couple of floats, bits of wood and a Spinnaker.

In October the Scouts organised their own weekend away camping and mountain biking along the Manifold Valley in Staffordshire.

In December the young leaders enjoyed a black tie dinner and weekend camp at Barnswood. Senior leaders, helpers and friends spent a weekend walking, enjoyed a wine tasting and stayed in a very well equipped and comfortable camping barn in the Yorkshire Dales.

2006 was a good year for Second Poynton but not out of the ordinary. 2007 promises to be a great year with the Scout Movement celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Baden Powell’s first camp at Brownsea Island in Dorset. The boys enjoyed this camp so much that Baden-Powell decided to write his book ‘Scouting for Boys’ and so started the Scout Movement. There are a variety of centenary events planned including a camp in Barnswood; the plan is to get all the Scouts in the country camping on the same weekend. There will be group events such as a trip to Alton Towers, the Cheshire Hike, a Sunrise Ceremony, Swimming Gala and lots more.

Many changes have taken place in the Scout Movement over the last 100 years. In 1986 Beavers were introduced and in 1990 girls were welcomed into the Scout Movement.

To celebrate 2007 Second Poynton plan to launch a new Beaver Colony and Cub Scout Pack early in the New Year. Parents who are interested in their boys and girls joining Beavers or Cubs and taking part in a wide variety of fun and challenging activities that no other one local organisation provides, should contact our Group Scout Leader Gordon Hood Tel: 01625-871507 or on 07973-617201. Enquires for boys aged 10 to 13 to join the Scout Section to Glynne Parry Tel: 01625 260 397 or email d.a.kershaw@btinternet.com
