Frustration of drawn game once again

Martin Saxon
Apr 27, 2008

Poynton 150-8 dec, Didsbury 86-9. Match drawn.

For the second week in succession Poynton were one wicket away from victory, and on this occasion they threw everything bar the kitchen sink at Didsbury, making 15 bowling changes in 50 overs.

Derwin Thompson took three very early wickets, but could not take any thereafter. From 6-3, Didsbury recovered to a degree, but still wickets fell regularly, with the eighth wicket falling with more than 12 overs still left.

But a stubborn ninth wicket stand followed, with Poynton not being helped by the nature of their home pitch, where it is difficult to take wickets when batsmen are hellbent on defence. Finally there were only six balls at the last pair and time ran out.

Backed up by some excellent catches from close fielders, deep fielders and wicketkeeper alike, all six Poynton bowlers enjoyed success. In particular, Jamie Maltman, who took 1-15 in 14 overs, deserved more than he got.

With Andy Windle recording successive maidens in seven of his first eight overs, and also removing both openers, Poynton got off to a very slow start. But from 28-3 after 22 overs, Thompson made 23, including one huge six over the pavilion, and Paul Gould carried on from his good batting the previous week. Gould hit seven boundaries in his unbeaten 55, with some fine straight drives and well timed shots to other areas of the ground. Windle finished with 4-33 from 18 overs.
