Mobberley 123, Poynton 124/2. Poynton won by eight wickets
Poynton progressed to round two of the Fred Graham Trophy with a comfortable victory over a limited Mobberley side.
Mobberley, and Jonny Thompson in particular, ruffled a few Poynton feathers early on. The opener blasted 27 in 11 deliveries and his side were 38/0 after three overs.
But once the initial breakthrough had been made, Poynton enjoyed a period of total domination. Rick Clark's off spin led the way in a collapse to 70/8, with two excellent run outs highlighting the standard of Poynton's fielding here.
Abid Ul-Zain and Dave Johnson put together a stand of 51 to boost the home side, but when Clark returned to pick up the final wicket to complete his remarkable return of 4/6 in four overs, Mobberley were still all out for a well below par total.
Chasing only six per over on a normally fast scoring ground, Poynton did not need to force the pace unduly. What followed was mostly a series of elegant shots rather than traditional Twenty20 big hitting, supported by some excellent running between the wickets. Derwin Thompson made 43 not out, Steve Douglas 33 and Brian Kingham 25 not out, all at better than a run a ball, as the target was reached with 26 deliveries in hand.
