More Turner wickets fire Poynton to win

Martin Saxon
Jun 9, 2008

Cheadle Hulme 94, Poynton 97-3. Poynton won by seven wickets.

Consistency has certainly not been a feature of Poynton’s season so far. In addition to three defeats, there have also been three victories, each featuring some superb bowling.

Batting first here, Cheadle Hulme took seven overs to get off the mark and were reduced to 14-6 after 14 overs, with Simon Turner’s deadly combination of swing and accuracy earning him remarkable figures of five wickets for one run in his first seven overs. Poynton’s fielding and catching during this period was also of the highest order.

Having seen five of his top seven fail to score, the last recognised batsman Richard Battye rebuilt the innings with an unbeaten 32, aided by some lower order hitting. Turner’s final figures were 6-31 from 16 overs, taking him to 27 wickets for the season in eight matches. Derwin Thompson returned 3-28.

The revival may have given Cheadle Hulme some hope, but Brian Kingham and Damian Stringer confidently added 74 for Poynton’s first wicket, not only hitting boundaries, but also showing some excellent running between the wickets.

Stringer fell for 25 and Kingham for 49 before the close, but by this stage Poynton knew victory would be theirs.

* Poynton Ladies made it two wins out of two in the Twenty20 round robin stage with a 59 run win at Hyde. Sarah McCann, Hannah Gradwell and Kate Holt all reached 20 in Poynton’s 127-3 total, meaning the London Road club now have the two highest team scores in the short history of this competition. Despite 20 from Jo Hurlston, Hyde fell well short in reply. Rebecca Platt took 3-11 and Megan Frost 2-12.
