Massive Warrington win sends signal to leaders

Martin Saxon
Jul 8, 2008

Poynton 248/2 dec, Warrington 99. Poynton won by 149 runs.

Poynton served a statement of intent to the division leaders with this massive win at Warrington. Brian Kingham made a second successive century and Simon Turner took his fifth five wicket haul of the season.

Poynton's formidable batting line up on paper is finally starting to deliver on the pitch. Just as with the imposing target they posted the previous week, this Poynton innings began briskly with Kingham and Damian Stringer adding 69 in 13 overs for the first wicket.

Batting well in partnerships was one of the most pleasing features of this performance. Kingham and Paul Slattery rounded off the innings with an unbroken third wicket stand of 129 in 20 overs, with Slattery finishing 53 not out, his first significant contribution for the club. Once he had passed 50, Kingham never looked in any trouble as he eased to his century, finishing with a chanceless 115 not out from 139 deliveries with 17 fours and one six.

Warrington reached 83-3 in reply having used up almost half the available overs, opener Chris Kirby looked settled and the pitch remained very good for batting. All the indications were that Poynton would have a real fight to claim seven further wickets, Few would have predicted the game would be finished ten overs later.

Turner removed Kirby for 40 and then struck next ball, giving him the first five wickets of the innings. Jamie Maltman and Derwin Thompson then took over the wicket taking as Warrington collapsed.
