Team effort secures first win in over a month

Martin Saxon
Aug 6, 2008

Timperley 125, Poynton 127/3. Poynton won by seven wickets.

A genuine all round team performance secured Poynton their first win in over a month. Much of the work was done with miserly spells from their opening bowlers, but Poynton also batted well in what could have been a difficult run chase on a wicket offering considerable lateral movement.

Timperley took drinks after 25 overs on 27-2, having been utterly becalmed by the accuracy and movement offered by Simon Turner and Derwin Thompson. Chris Grindley, who had been marooned on eight for 48 balls, led an acceleration for a short time, but when he fell to Turner for 33, more wickets followed quickly. Poynton spinners Jamie Maltman (4-27) and Rick Clark (2-22) produced some of their best bowling of the season, and coupled with some excellent fielding, notably Damian Stringer's boundary catch, Poynton took charge.

Young opening bowler Chris Page struck twice to leave Poynton 32-2, but the game soon drifted away from Timperley with an aggressive and entertaining knock of 49 in 49 balls from Paul Slattery. Stringer remained untroubled as he guided Poynton to victory with an unbeaten 43.
