Rain ends Poynton victory hopes against Birkenhead

Martin Saxon
Aug 17, 2008

Birkenhead Park 193-8 dec, Poynton 136-4. Match abandoned.

The weather closed in with 11 overs of this match remaining, just as Poynton had established themselves as favourites. Poynton had conceded too many runs in the field, but through their batting performance they looked on course for victory, with Brian Kingham and Derwin Thompson established at the crease.

Poynton, and Kingham in particular, were able to get on top of most of the Birkenhead bowling. Damian Stringer helped in getting Poynton off to a free scoring start, and only Khan (2-29 in 15 overs) would cause real problems for the batsmen. Kingham finished 71 not out from 105 balls when the rain came to continue his excellent season.

While there was some indifferent Poynton bowling, there was also some excellent bowling from the likes of Rick Clark (4-55), and some fine catches. But Poynton really let themselves down with their ground fielding and allowed Birkenhead off the hook.

Zia Rehman's 63 from 70 deliveries was the top score, and there were useful contributions throughout the Birkenhead scorecard.
