Pupils at Vernon Primary School celebrated Harvest this year with a special activity morning.
Joanne Glimmerveen, Head at the Poynton school, explains “This year we wanted to celebrate Harvest in an alternative way to previous years, so our celebration took a new format. The children planned a classroom activity that they could share with a family member.”
Parents, carers and other family members were invited into school and worked alongside the children to produce handmade gifts and donations. Year 1 pupils produced collages of fruits and vegetables, Year 2 children made bread, pupils in Year 3 took part in a craft activity making corn dolls and children in Year 6 used leaves, berries, seeds and lentils to create transparent window decorations.
Mrs Glimmerveen added “In addition to wonderful donations made to the Wellspring Kitchen in Stockport, this year we placed a special emphasis on helping victims of crime and other vulnerable people in our local area. We have liaised with Cheshire Victim Support, who support Women’s Aid, in order to channel some of the donations and handmade gifts made by the children to those who have experienced recent distress or hardship.“
“The Harvest celebration provided a real positive impact on the children. The class activities gave practical application of skills learnt within the classroom, whilst also increasing awareness of the situation of others and fostering a sense of community spirit.”
“We are also thrilled and enormously grateful to receive a grant of £150 from KCOM Group to support the Harvest celebration. This enabled the children to produce some wonderful individual gifts, which we are sure the recipients will adore.”
