Better Bus Service for Poynton
Your Conservative Cheshire East councillors, Chris Beard, Howard Murray and Roger West (BMW) have continued to pursue the level of bus services from Higher Poynton to Stockport. In March, the service was taken over by Baker Bus and renamed the 391, with a reduced timetable.
We are now pleased to report that Cheshire East and Baker Bus have worked together and agreed significant improvements to the 391 services, which should start from Monday 27th July. These include:
· A new early morning service from Middlewood at 6.40 am, arriving at Stockport at 7.14.
· An increase from 12 to 15 services a day from Middlewood to Stockport.
· Over 25 buses a day from Poynton Church to Stockport
· Improved connections with the 392 service to allow some journeys from Middlewood to Macclesfield (changing at Poynton Church).
Your Conservative councillors pledged to fight for improved bus services in Poynton, and we are pleased to be able to report this success. These improvements will not require any additional subsidy from the Council Tax. However, the 391 service does cost Cheshire East £111,950 a year, or over £2,000 a week. This is paid for by the Council Tax – so “Don’t lose it - Please use it”.
Road Safety Campaign
Following public comments at the local CAM meetings and support from the Town Council, Poynton’s Police Community Action Team have extended their speed checks from the usual sites on London Road and Chester Road to include Middlewood and Woodford Roads. Both roads are largely rural, but heavily used by drivers avoiding the centre of Poynton. A significant level of speeding was detected and action taken against the drivers responsible.
If you know of an area which has problems with speeding (or with anti-social behaviour), please let your local Police Community Action Team know by sending an e-mail to:
poynton.community.contacts@cheshire.pnn.police.uk
Alternatively, please phone Poynton Town Council on 872238, or attend the next CAM meeting at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 8th September in Poynton Workmen’s Club.
Street Cleansing
Cheshire East councillor Howard Murray and Poynton Town councillors Laurence Clarke and Sandra Horsman met recently with officers from Cheshire East Council to discuss our dissatisfaction with the current street cleaning services in Poynton. It was stressed that Poynton needed and deserved a much improved service.
Cheshire East are now considering our request to transfer the funding and devolving the running and control of this service directly to Poynton. This should end the need for the mechanical sweeper vehicle to travel from Macclesfield to Poynton and back each day. Our aim in local running of street cleansing will be to ensure that Poynton gets a better service at no extra cost. Other services such as gully (grid) cleaning may also be transferred.
Bulkeley Road - Plans Withdrawn
Cheshire East Council have withdrawn their planning application for an Extra Care Housing scheme on Bulkeley Road. This was to have been on the site of the former Vernon Infants School, which was to be demolished.
Poynton Town Council and local people raised a number of objections to the most recent plans. These included the use of part of the school’s playing fields, the number of parking spaces on the site and traffic problems on Bulkeley and Clumber Roads. Other issues raised by residents included the design of the scheme, which lacked sympathy with nearby houses.
Cheshire East has now decided to reconsider their proposals. We hope they will listen to local people and the Town Council when considering how to proceed, and return with a more environmentally sensitive and neighbourly proposal. Local councillor Roger West has been pursuing this with Cheshire East council.
