POYNTON : Clubs and Societies : Poynton Amateur Wine Circle

A busy past few months for the winecircle

In June we had a wine tasting which was hosted by the lady members of the club. The theme was "In the Pink" and as you would have guessed it was Rose wine. A very varied selection  of wines  from around the world.

In August it was Noel and Pat Christopher who hosted the evening. their theme was  Fair Trade Wines. The white wines were a Sauvignon Blanc from S. Africe, a Chenin Blanc/Colombard from S Africa and a Pinot Grigio from Argentina. The reds were a a Carmenere from Chile, a Cinsault/Shraz from S Africa and a Cabernet Sauvignon from S Africa. All the wines are available from the CO-OP.

In September we had a wine tasting presented by our local Wine Rack, who stepped in at late notice due to Majestic Wines letting us down again. All the white wines came from New Zealand, the first a Pinot Gris then a Sauvignon Blanc and the last Chardonnay. Two of the red came from  France and the other from Italy. The French wines were a Bordeaux Rouge and a Fitou and the last red,my favourite, a Primitivo.

At the end of June we teamed up with the North Cheshire Cruising Club for our annual cruise up/down the canal. This year we went towards Whalley Bridge, what a beautiful part of the canal system. In the clubhouse later, after a tiring day on the canal, we had a Call my Wine Bluff, similar to the quiz game except with wine. A great day out.

For our 40th celebration we decided on a meal at a local hostelry, the Miners Arms. We took over the conservatory for the evening and our hosts served up a sumptuous 3 course meal. Between courses we had a wine tasting cullminating with a quiz afterwards. We presented David and Moira Foster with a gift as they are the only surviving members from when the circle was formed, back in 1969. An excellent evening.

Next month is our AGM with a wine tasting afterwards.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month at the British Legion. 8 to 8.30pm.
