Poynton Cricket Club Review of the Year

Martin Saxon
Nov 20, 2009

Poynton CC 1st XI managed to avoid relegation from Division One of the Cheshire County League by one place. This was despite going almost two months without a victory at one stage.

A series of player departures meant this was always going to be a difficult season. Only three of the eleven players used most frequently in 2008 returned to regular first team action this year. These three players: Brian Kingham, Rick Clark and new captain Paul Gould all had an excellent season, as did new recruit from Australia Leon Guthridge.

Although many of the new younger players in the team played their part, Poynton owed its success in staying up largely to the efforts of the main four players, with Guthridge taking 51 wickets and Clark 47, while Gould made almost 800 runs and Kingham over 500.

Many of the team were new to first team action this year and hopefully will return stronger next year now they have more experience of playing at this level, and hopefully Poynton can finish higher in the league enxt year.

Poynton's second team were unfortunately relegated from the 2nd XI Premier Division of the Cheshire County League. There were excellent performances along the way though from the likes of Laurie Bell and Mike Smith.

After a poor start to the season, the third team recovered to a comfortable mid-table finish in their division.

The greatest success enjoyed by the club in 2009 was by the Ladies team. Poynton secured a first ever Cheshire Women's League title, in addition to a Twenty20 Cup triumph. These successes were deserved reward for all at Poynton CC who have done so much to build the Ladies team over the past decade. Captain Gillian Spragg finished as the league's leading wicket taker, with other major contributions being made by Emma Jackson, Kate Holt, Megan Frost and vastly promising rising star Ellie Barker.
