Year 6 pupils at Vernon Primary School recently took part in a World War II Day.
Mrs Joanne Glimmerveen, Head Teacher at the Poynton school, explained “The day supported our inspiring topic this term of World War II. All the children and staff dressed the part as evacuees and land girls, to really understand what life must have been like for people during World War II. To start the day, the children experienced first hand what it would be like to be evacuated; they were all chosen by different adults for their skills and qualities! We had a farmer who chose two strong boys to work on her farm and a pharmacist who wanted bright intelligent girls to work in her shop!”
Mrs Glimmerveen added “Through the day the children produced propaganda posters, made gas masks and re-wrote verses for well known WWII songs. They also brought a ration lunch to school.”
Some of the pupils gave their account of the day; Lizzy said “The day was really fun and I loved making a gas mask”. Robbie thought “The day was extremely fun, especially when we all were evacuated. I was chosen because I looked strong!” Annabelle said “I enjoyed seeing everyone dressed up.”
