Roads: Your Priority
Poynton’s Conservative councillors are working to try to improve the state of the village’s roads, which are maintained by Cheshire County Council. Many people are concerned that local roads are in a poor condition. Parish and Borough councillors have met recently with Cheshire’s Head of Environmental Services to stress the problems caused by poorly repaired roads.
There has been some progress on monitoring road works by utility companies, and we are continuing to monitor closely Cheshire’s performance in this area.
The Bypass: Postponed Again
We are concerned to hear that the government has once again “postponed” the Poynton Bypass, the latest of several delays since 1997. The government admit that the bypass is urgently needed, but claim not to have the money to pay for it.
Apart from the Poynton Bypass, the whole scheme including the western Airport link and the Hazel Grove and Offerton bypass will cost £433 million. In comparison, the government is spending over £5,000 million on a rail link for the London Olympics, while large sums have been found to abolish bridge tolls in Scotland.
The Poynton Bypass was first promised in 1960, since when traffic volumes have increased many times. We will continue to campaign for a bypass.
Please Help Us
These are just a few examples of how Poynton Conservatives are trying to maintain or improve facilities. If you would like to be involved or just show your support then please contact local councillor Roger West on 876007 for an informal discussion. We particularly welcome interest from younger residents; the age at which you can now represent your community as a Councillor is 18 years of age.
