Heaton Mersey 122, Poynton 63. Heaton Mersey won by 59 runs.
At the tea interval all was going to plan for Poynton. Another side had been bowled out cheaply and they looked forward to a maximum points win. What followed left Poynton's supporters stunned – their lowest score in seven years - made on a wicket containing no demons and against an attack that undoubtedly bowled well, but possessed no star names.
Perhaps Poynton bore the consequences of the fact that due to rain and some easy run chases, only three players had batted in the last three weeks. Here these three made only 10 runs between them before falling to Hassan Rashid and Adam Catlow.
The remainder succumbed to spinners Waqar Rashid, who recorded 3-14, and Brenton McDonald, with 3-20, as Poynton failed to record any significant partnerships. The first six wickets were all bowled, as a Mersey bowler found a way through a Poynton batsman's defences every time.
Former Lancashire wicketkeeper Jamie Haynes played a huge part in this game. The Mersey captain came to the wicket with his side on 14-3 and very soon established himself with a number of commanding boundaries. He finally ran out of partners on 56, the worth of this knock illustrated by how close his personal total was to his side's winning margin.
Antonio Mayers took 6-53 to take him to 50 wickets for the season, but neither he nor any of his Poynton colleagues could provide the required contribution with the bat.
Poynton's promotion hopes now look remote, all they can do now is try and win their remaining games and hope others lose ground.
