Road Works: Minimising Disruption

Poynton’s Conservative councillors helped ensure that current road works on London Road North caused the minimum disruption to local people and businesses. We met with Cheshire Highways and United Utilities, and persuaded them that essential work to replace the 33,000 volt cable which supplies Poynton’s electricity should start just after the schools close, when traffic is relatively light. The contractors agreed to work late and at weekend to ensure that Fountain Place was disrupted for only a few days. There may have to be some further works for a short time at Fountain Place when the new cabling is finally connected.

While this is a great improvement compared to the gas main replacement last year, we will be continuing to monitor Cheshire Highways and the utility companies to ensure that future works, including gas main replacements on part of Park Lane, cause as little disruption as possible.

The Bypass: Latest News

Last month, the government once again “postponed” the Poynton Bypass. Poynton’s voice at Westminster, Sir Nicolas Winterton, together with other local MP’s, has met with the Transport Minister to protest at this decision. She has agreed to visit the area to see the problems caused by the existing, totally inadequate road network. Poynton Parish Council is inviting the Minister to visit the village, ideally at rush hour to see the problems on London Road and Chester Road.

New Local Councils

The government has now decided to abolish Cheshire County Council and Macclesfield Borough Council, and to replace them with an East Cheshire Unitary Council. This will stretch from Poynton to Crewe, and provide all the main local government services, such as schools, social services, roads, planning and rubbish collection. We are not convinced that this change will improve services or lower Council Tax, but will work to ensure that Poynton gets the best deal from the new council.
