POYNTON : Community News : Vernon Primary School : Vernon Infants School

Outstanding Practice at Vernon

Helen Marston
Sep 18, 2007

Vernon Infant School’s Deputy Headteacher Sarah Kiely was recently invited to speak to delegates at a national education conference in Leeds.

Sarah Kiely was asked by Cheshire County Council Literacy advisers to deliver a presentation to Literacy consultants and Primary advisers from various other counties, focusing on the regional delivery of Communication, Language and Literacy in primary schools.

Earlier this year, Mrs Kiely was filmed, together with her Year One class, for a national teacher training DVD.  The Poynton school was one of four schools in the country who are to feature in a training DVD for teachers about how to teach quality guided writing.  The school was recommended for this by the County advisers because of outstanding practice in the school.  A copy of the DVD will be sent to every school in the country for staff training purposes.

Mrs Kiely said “my presentation at the conference focused around my teaching on a Primary National Strategy DVD demonstrating quality teaching and learning of guided writing.  This will be used as a training tool in schools across the country to help raise standards in guided writing.  During the presentation the rapid progress of the Year One children in our school was discussed, and pieces of writing that show excellent attainment were analysed.  Quality teaching strategies and techniques were also shared across a number of Counties.”
