Poynton's Jenny Halstead secures place at elite cricket academy

Martin Saxon
Dec 14, 2007

Cheshire Women's leading light, 21 year old Jenny Halstead, is one of five women named in the 18 strong MCC Young Cricketers squad for 2008. This squad of the country's best young talent, will in the words of an MCC spokesperson "live, sleep and breathe cricket at Lord's next season".

England fringe player Halstead now becomes the second player nurtured by Poynton Cricket Club's youth system to make the Young Cricketers squad, following Mark Currie in 1999.

Jenny now plays for Gunnersbury CC in Middlesex, but was educated at Poynton High School and still plays for the Chehsire county side. In 2005 she became the first woman to play Premier Division 1st XI cricket in Cheshire when she made her debut for Poynton's 1st XI against Chester. She holds the overall Poynton club record for her score of 191 not out made against Appleton Ladies in the same year.
