Blind tasting of wine & cheese at new years party

Chris Teal
Jan 16, 2008

At this months meeting, the members had to exercise their taste buds to identify the wines and cheeses to be savoured in the blind tasting. There were 4 white and 4 red wines from around the world and 8 cheeses from around europe. Each wine had a cheese, which we thought might compliment each other.

The first of the whites was a Greek Retsina with a French, fromage de chevre, followed by a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc and a Somerset creamy goat's cheese. An Australian Pinot Grigio with a crumbly Lancashire Leghtoaster was third and finally a Californian Chardonnay witha Macclesfield Blue.

The red wines were a little more harder to identify, with a St Emilion Bordeaux and mild Cheddar first, followed by a Chilean cabernet Sauvignon and Mrs Appleby's unpasteurised Cheshire. The third red was a South African Pinotage with a Pendle Forest smoked Lancashire. The fourth red proved to be a little more diffcult to identify being an Elderberry wine from Somerset accompanied by a Cashel Blue.

The evening was a great success and a great thanks goes to Tony and Margaret for organising the event.

PAWC has changed tact over the last couple of years from being a wine making club to more of a wine appreciation club. The wine making still exists, but as a secondary hobby. There are tastings of commercial and home made wines plus beer, cider, whisky and all the other types of beverages.

Next month our host for the evening  is the Winerack, London Road.
