Poynton developed as a village mainly for the Estate workers’ of the Warren’s and Vernon’s. It grew as the Vernon’s enlarged the estates activity into mining and, as the numbers of mines multiplied, so the village increased in size. The numbers of shops and their variety multiplied with the village.
This exhibition is based about these shops, the hub of village life from a time when all the villagers would have shopped within the village. Jumping into a car and driving off to a supermarket miles away is a phenomenon of the last 30 years. The shop goods were all in bulk, sold from sacks, etc, not a pre-wrapped item in sight and no plastic packaging. The Grocer’s stores cutting a piece of butter of the large lump and using butter pats to make a rectangular block for the customer to take home.
Come and see the pictures and write ups of the old shops, with their history, plus that of some of their owners, and see what they have now become.
