Outdoor Area Set for a Super Makeover

The children at Poynton’s Vernon Primary School were delighted to hear that their outdoor area is set to receive a £4,000 face lift, creating a valuable resource for education, learning and fun.

The transformation of the outdoor area has come about through a project ‘RBS Supergrounds’, a £6 million, six-year community investment initiative that allows employees to nominate their local school for a Supergrounds Award.

Joanne Glimmerveen, Head at the school, said “We are all absolutely thrilled to receive a RBS Supergrounds Award to develop our outdoor learning provision. We are a school that has just gone through an amalgamation process, from separate Infant and Junior schools to one combined primary school. As a result of the amalgamation we have an extensive programme of new building work and improvements, which we are extremely excited about. To receive the news that Vernon Primary has also achieved the RBS award is the icing on the cake!”

The programme, launched in September 2004 by The Royal Bank of Scotland, aims to strengthen the ties between company staff and their communities. Vernon Primary School became involved with the scheme through Philippa Smith who works in RBS’s Group Business Improvement section. Philippa is a parent at the School, her daughter Lauren is in Year 1.

Mrs Smith said “This is a wonderful opportunity for Vernon Primary. I am really looking forward to seeing the ideas from the children and watching the project unfold.”

450 schools and 120,000 children across the UK have already benefited through the project. The programme is managed by the national school grounds charity Learning Through Landscapes in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork. It is the largest ever private sector investment in school grounds.

Mrs Glimmerveen added “The children, parents, staff and governors will all be involved in the design and we already have some super ideas. The project will have a very positive impact on the children.”
