Cheadle 68, Poynton 69-3. Poynton won by seven wickets

A superb all round bowling display saw Poynton return from Cheadle with their first win of the year in division one of The Right Move Abroad Cheshire County League.

Batting first on a green, juicy wicket always likely to assist seam bowling, Cheadle were soon struggling at 16-3. The only significant partnership of the innings between Simon Hall and Mark Farrell followed, but even then the batsmen struggled to score quickly.

Drinks were taken at 51-3, straight after which Farrell fell for 29 to start an incredible collapse. Derwin Thompson hit the stumps three times with two superb inswingers and one fantastic yorker, and Simon Turner bagged the first hat-trick of his career. Turner finished with the marvellous figures of 5-12 from 14 overs, with Thompson recording 4-24.

Poynton visibly enjoyed themselves in the field throughout, and had scarcely bowled a bad ball all innings. In contrast, Cheadle’s attack struggled to find the right length, and the only scare came when Dan Schuppan bagged the first two wickets in the space of four balls with the score on 17.

But two overs later Schuppan had been hit out of the attack, plundered for 23 by Thompson and Brian Kingham. Thompson finished 25 not out, and an unbeaten 21 from Paul Gould continued his fine start to the season.
