Your Conservative Councillors have continued to work hard for Poynton over the last month:

Roadworks: Minimising the Impact

United Utilities, successors to the Electricity Board, want to replace a mains cable that supplies much of Poynton’s power. This cable runs down London Road North from Hazel Grove to the sub-station on Georges Road West.

The route of the cable crosses Fountain Place, and temporary lights will be needed. United Utilities were planning to do this part of the work in October. However, at a meeting with the Company and Cheshire Highways, Poynton’s Conservative Councillors persuaded them to reschedule the work between Park Avenue and Georges Road for the first week in August, just after the schools have broken up. Poynton is at its quietest then, and the work should cause the least disruption to local residents, businesses and motorists.

Save the Green Belt: Update

Poynton’s Green Belt is at risk from the Government’s new planning system. John Prescott took away planning powers from Cheshire County Council, and gave them to his North West Regional Assembly. They want to force Macclesfield Borough to allow much more house building, which may lead to development in the Green Belt.

Macclesfield Borough Council has recently been seeking opinions on their “Revised Issues and Options Paper”. Poynton Parish Council has strongly opposed any building in Poynton’s Green Belt. We would like to thank everyone who has written or e-mailed Macclesfield Council to support the Green Belt.

The next stage is for Macclesfield Council to draw up a “Preferred Options” document, which will set out specific plans. These plans may include allowing building at specific sites in the Green Belt around Poynton. Just six weeks will be allowed for public consultation. If the Preferred Options paper does recommend building in the Green Belt, we will be campaigning to save the village’s environment and stop the bulldozers.

We need YOU

To help us carry on our work locally, both defending the environment and minimising disruption on the roads, we need new supporters, both as members and possibly as council candidates. If you are interested, please come along to our next meeting: 8 pm on Tuesday 11th July, at the Vernon Room in Poynton Civic Hall. We look forward to meeting you.
