“SAY NO TO TESCO’S”

I wish to submit my objection to the Council to Tesco’s permission to build on the site of Poynton’s petrol station, car sales business and the old cinema building.

My objections are for the following reasons:

Traffic Congestion – I am aware that Tesco’s have proposed to pay for the by-pass through Poynton if they received planning permission. As muchas this sounds like an appealing proposal with the current state of Poyntons growing traffic problems, I believe that this is a method to simply sway the Council to grant permission. The by-pass has been proposed already and at some stage will come into effect. The congestion in the meantime in Poynton is already at a stand still, and granting permission for Tesco’s to build their store will only increase this traffic to such a congestion that users of this road will only have to endure even longer journeys than they already do. Building work will start and it is an obvious conclusion that the road outside the building site will be reduced to one lane, and will no doubt subject Poynton traffic to yet more temporary traffic lights. The residents of Poynton have endured enough of  these temporary lights in recent months, and to grant permission will subject them to what can only be estimated as at least a year of further  delays.

Business Impact – I have been a resident of Poynton for 15 years and enjoy the local Variety of shops and services that Poynton has to offer.  It is difficult to find villages that still have independent shops that have not been overtaken by co-operate chains. These current businesses provide a great service to our local community and by granting permission, you will be taking away these shops, as they will not be able to compete against such a large store, as well as taking away the livelihood of these hard working shop owners. I regularly use these local shops and I do not
wish to lose them. I also believe that we have enough Tesco’s on our doorsteps. We have a Tesco Express in Hazel Grove, and Bramhall. A large Tesco at Handforth Dean, Macclesfield and Stockport, and cannot understand what possible advantage it will offer our local community. The only advantage is to offer Tesco’s more spreadage and to help grow their already large profit line.

• Local Identity - By granting permission to Tesco’s the Council will be taking away our community independence and allowing Tesco’s to dominate. Our community has a large proportion of elderly people who shop on a daily basis at their small local stores and by taking away these stores these people will suffer. Our community, is at present appalled that the outlook that our village will be changed dramatically and cause an eye sore for its residences. It is also displeasing to know that the community life will be altered without the consent of the residents.

 • Other Issues – The pollution is at present already at a high enough risk with the current traffic levels, by granting permission the council will be adding to this problem. The noise for the residents who live right by the site will be subjected to daily noise of the building, and is possible that this would be classed as a noise nuisance on their behalf if they have objected to planning. Our nearest independent petrol station will be either the other side of Bramhall or Wilmslow or Stockport.

Therefore, I make a written objection against yet another Tesco when we have plenty within a short distance to service our community.
