Plans for new Waitrose food shop in Poynton
Plans for a brand new Waitrose new food shop in Poynton have been submitted to Macclesfield Borough Council by Kimberley Developments plc. Situated on Park Lane, the proposed development site sits in the heart of the village’s busy retail centre and backs onto the free short-stay car-park adjacent to the local Civic Hall.
The site comprises land on either side of the access road leading to the Civic Hall and the proposed scheme also includes new and improved premises for the relocation of the Vernon Building Society and Poynton Osteopathic Clinic. If the application is approved, the rest of the site will be occupied by a Waitrose food shop fronting onto Park Lane.
Commenting on the plans, Waitrose Director of Development, Nigel Keen said: “We believe that a new high quality food shop here will actually increase trading for the benefit of all local retailers, as well as helping to retain more of the weekly grocery spend in the local vicinity. A significant proportion of local people are currently travelling out of the village to other food stores – some as many as 10 miles or more away.
“We are keen to demonstrate our plans to the people of Poynton as soon as possible so that their views can be fully considered. We are therefore holding a public exhibition at the Civic Centre on 7th and 8th March and hope to see and speak to as many local people as possible at that event.”
At 16,000 ft2, the proposed shop is approximately two-thirds the size of the latest Waitrose branch at Cheadle Hulme.
“We have been searching for the right location in Poynton for some time,” adds Nigel Keen, “because we believe that our business philosophy and the range of products we offer would be a good ‘match’ for the local community. We want to work with other local retailers, residents and business leaders to deliver a shop that will enhance trading for all and contribute to the long-term prosperity of the village.”
If the planning application is approved by the local authority, the new Poynton Waitrose could open before the end of 2009.
