The Society
The Society aims are to promote interest in modelling railways in particular and railways in general. Membership is available to anyone from the age of 14. Younger people (with a parent or guardian) are welcome and encouraged. Non-members are always welcome to see what we are about. Attendance on club nights is free. Membership subscriptions are presently £40 per annum full rate and £25 per annum reduced rate (for juniors, unemployed and retired people).
Meeting Details
The Society meets in the AIM room at the Methodist Church Sunday School on Wesley Street, Hazel Grove. Meetings are every Monday and Friday evening (except Bank Holidays etc.) between 7.30pm and 10.00pm.
Projects
The Society has groups working on eight layout projects covering the most popular model railway scales and gauges. Members can be seen working on their layout projects on most club nights.
Social
The Society has various social events throughout the year, including trips to places of railway interest and the larger model railway shows. The Society holds an Open Day once a year at the Sunday School, usually on a Saturday during the summer - this year it is Saturday 14th June 2008. The Society also holds an annual Model Railway Show on the last weekend in October at Hazel Grove Leisure Centre on Jackson’s Lane, Hazel Grove. This year, the exhibition will be held on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th October.
The year end finishes with a Christmas quiz and mince pie night. Tea, coffee, cordial and biscuit snacks are available for purchase on club nights.
Disabled access is available at the Sunday School for both club nights and the Open Day, and at Jacksons Lane school for the exhibition.
The Society has made many donations to local and national charities. Generally donations are made annually and these are usually determined by the members at their AGM.
Historical Information
Two Hazel Grove lads (Trevor Moseley and Graham Neve), who both worked for British Railways, formed the Society in 1966. These two founders are still active members of the Society today. The Society has grown in membership from about a dozen in the first year to forty by 1983 and sixty by 1994, at which level it has remained to date.
The Society has an agreed Constitution, which declares that “The object of the Society shall be to promote interest in model railways and railways in general”.
The Society built and presented a small layout/diorama to the local area British Transport Police. This depicts various unsafe practices involving children and people on and near the railway. It has been extensively used by the Railway Police in promoting safety on the railway, especially for children, who have to spot the unsafe features. It has been shown not only at local schools, but has also appeared at many of the local model railway exhibitions at the delight of both parents and their children.
