Tesco to be built in Poynton!!

The multi-national company Tesco has earmarked the site of the old Brookfield building, which previously was occupied by a cinema and Foyer bar, and Texaco, the last remaining petrol station in the village to be the site for their new development.

The 'soon to be' store will only cater for food requirements and will provide 110 free car parking spaces for customers and 150 new jobs for local residents! A spokesperson for Tesco stated that research showed over 70% of Poyntonians travel out of the village to do their weekly food shopping - therefore a Tesco in the village will make food shopping more convenient.

However, how convenient will it be for local residents to be stuck in more traffic than usual trying to get in and out of their home village on London Road South (already one of the busiest roads in Cheshire)? A poynton resident has voiced their concerns on this matter stating that...

'not only would our considerable traffic problem get worse (not least while they're building the thing) but it would be the end of a lot of local businesses, leaving park lane full of empy shops, boarded up windows and targets for graffiti and crime' (PoyntonWeb Forum).

Another Poynton resident has mirrored these concerns by stating that Poynton is already a commercialised village with 2 Late Shops, a Sommerfield, Netto and Boots.

Futhermore it has been suggested that ...'there is easy access to other major supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury's within a mile' and those not wanting to travel have a range of local grocers, butchers, bakers, flower shops etc. to choose from (the local delights of a village which will struggle to compete with multi-national Tesco).

Tesco has declared that they are working closely with local residents to develop the plans for a Tesco in poynton and a huge exhibition of the plans will be held in Poynton Civic Hall today, 10am to 5pm, on Friday, October 5, from 11am to 7pm and on Saturday, October 6, from 9am to noon. Here there will be an opportunity to find out more and voice your concerns.

Tesco say this will boost the local economy and plan to have submitted their planning aplication by the end of October, in an aim for doors to open before Christmas 2008.
