Poynton Community Challenge 2008
What is it?
It’s an active, fun, and memorable event happening in July 2008 which will provide a community-building focus for the people of Poynton.
What’s it all about?
Poynton residents rightly feel proud of our village and there is a strong sense of community spirit, in part demonstrated through the attendance levels at local events such as the Brass & Beatles concert, the Poynton Show, and annual Fireworks display.
The purpose of the Poynton Community Challenge event is to build and extend the relationships across the community, by involving the full range of community groups to work together in setting up and running the event. It’s an event built by the community for the community.
The event has a strong community element for Poynton. It is intended that the event is both shaped by, and contributes to, the aims and outworking of the Poynton Parish Plan.
We are also seeking to raise money for a local charity through the event, and it is hoped that many of the activities will provide opportunities for both fun and fund-raising.
What will the event be like?
We live in a great location with easy access to Lyme Park – a core activity for the event is a cross-country run from Poynton into the park, with a longer run aimed at experienced runners, and a shorter run for younger or less experienced runners, with prizes for the winners.
For those who don’t aspire to running, there will be scope for getting involved in other challenges, for example tackling a climbing wall, or having a go at a ’circus skill’ are potential activities.
The run will start and finish at the event ‘hub’ with a range of ‘fete’ style activities such as bouncy castle, face painting, coconut shy, prize competitions etc.
- ‘Community Showcase’ activities
The event will help to raise the profile of the diverse range of clubs, societies, and other community groups we have in Poynton. Each club, society, or group can set up stall, demonstrate what they do, or invite others to ‘have a go’.
Many residents may find it interesting to see for themselves displays or demonstrations by various PPP streams such as DPYK, the Gateway Project, Parenting Groups etc.
Local music groups and entertainers will be invited on stage to participate – a chance for some home-grown local talent to show what they can do!
When & Where?
The grounds of Poynton High School by the Leisure Centre are the planned venue, which provide ample parking and scope for both the event activities, ready access to Lyme Park for the cross country run, and room for a significant volume of people.
The date for the event is Sunday 6th July 2008, 12.00 p.m. until 5.00 p.m. This date has been chosen to give a good chance of fair weather, to avoid school exam season, and potential clashes with various other community and sporting events.
